13:00pm Days of Heaven (PG) 1978

Terrence Malick's acclaimed period drama, set in the early 20th century, stars Richard Gere as a labourer named Bill who goes on the run with his young sister Linda and girlfriend Abby. the group settle in Texas, where the two adults begin working on a wealthy but ailing farmer's ranch. They soon discover their new employer has developed feelings for Abby, believing her to be Bill's sibling rather than partner. Recognising a chance to escape their life of poverty, Bill encourages Abby to marry the dying man, little realising it will result in a jealous love triangle.

14:55pm The Return of Frank James (U) 1940

16:40pm The True Story of Jesse James (U) 1956

The family and friends of infamous outlaw Jesse James tell the story of his rise to notoriety with brother Frank, as the man himself faces death from an angry mob following a failed bank raid. Western adventure with bags of potential, but it's surprisingly unengaging.

18:25pm A River Runs Through It (PG) 1992

Emotional drama about two very different brothers, brought up in a strict religious household and united only by a shared enthusiasm for fishing, who find their uneasy relationship cut short by tragedy.

21:00pm Mr & Mrs Smith (15) 2005

A couple struggle to keep their marriage interesting until they learn they have something in common they are both assassins. When their employers demand they target each other, their rocky relationship suddenly becomes more complicated. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie show off the on-screen chemistry which brought them together away from the cameras, while director Doug Liman balances the action with plenty of laughs. With Vince Vaughn and Adam Brody (888)

23:10pm Fight Club (18) 1999

Edward Norton stars as a disillusioned office worker who grows sick and tired of his humdrum white-collar job and yearns for fulfilment which he seems to find when he and a new friend set up a club where similarly frustrated people can vent their anger in bouts of no-holds-barred combat. However, he doesn't realise his partner in crime has grander, more destructive, plans in mind. David Fincher's critically praised satirical drama is a bleak but darkly funny affair.

01:50am The Proposition (18) 2004

Gritty Australian Western, starring Guy Pearce as a captured outlaw offered a terrible choice by British lawman Ray Winstone. Either he tracks down and kills his homicidal older brother, or their younger sibling will be hanged.

13:00pm City Beneath the Sea (U) 1953

Anthony Quinn and Robert Ryan play deep-sea divers who arrive in Jamaica to search for a sunken wreck containing $1million in gold, little realising their greed will lead to a fierce competition.

14:40pm A Town Like Alice (PG) 1956

Jack Lee's harrowing drama is never easy viewing, but it's certainly worth the effort. Based on the novel by Nevil Shute, it explores the harsh realities of life for women prisoners of the Japanese in Malaya during World War Two, as they are forced to march for days on end, while being subjected to random beatings and torture.

17:00pm This Happy Breed (U) 1944

Stunning drama chronicling the domestic life of a working-class London family between the wars, providing a fascinating insight into the realities of the era.

19:05pm Fantastic Voyage (PG) 1966

A respected scientist suffers severe brain damage during a shooting, forcing a medical team to be miniaturised to microscopic size and injected inside his body to effect a miracle cure little realising one of the minuscule passengers has sabotage on his mind.

21:00pm The Shawshank Redemption (15) 1994

Quiet, unassuming banker Tim Robbins, wrongly jailed for murdering his adulterous wife and her lover, forms an extraordinary friendship with fellow inmate Morgan Freeman and, over the years, earns a position of trust as the corrupt governor's book-keeper.

(1947) In his first solo outing away from his brothers, Groucho Marx plays theatrical agent Lionel Q Devereaux.

Gentleman's Agreement
(1947) Gregory Peck is Philip Schuyler Green, a magazine writer who, posing as a Jew, encounters the bitter prejudice of the times.Peck is the journalist who poses as a Jew to write a series of magazine articles on anti-Semitism, only to find more prejudice running through all parts of society than he had bargained for. The ensuing melodrama, which draws Peck's family into repercussions resulting from his charade, is often overstated and while this multi-Oscar-winning film was controversial at the time of its release, it now seems overly preachy. A sometimes crude script drives its points home, the cast is excellent and it is interesting at least in as far as it illustrates Hollywood's immediate reaction to the end of the Second World War.

Love Story
(1970) Ryan O'Neal plays Oliver Bartlett IV and Ali MacGraw Jennifer Cavalleri, two Harvard students who fall in love, one of whom is terminally ill.A law student falls in love with a music scholar, much to the chagrin of his wealthy father. Then it all goes morbid
Love Story It stars a leading lady who isn't really an actress, and a leading man with a limited range. Arrogantly called Love Story, the film suggests itself as the definitive account of amour, but Arthur Hiller's romantic drama has many strikes against it. Even a beefy turn from Welsh legend Ray Milland, and the screen debut of one Tommy Lee Jones isn't enough to save it.

21:00
Rush Hour 2
(2001) Detective duo Lee and Carter have their Hong Kong holiday ruined when they run into Triad big cheese Ricky Tan.Detective duo Lee and Carter have their Hong Kong holiday ruined when they run into Triad big cheese Ricky Tan in this follow-up to the film that made Jackie Chan a Hollywood star
Rush Hour 2 Before he teamed up with Owen Wilson for Shanghai Noon, Jackie Chan's assault on the US had been as successful as a Stephen Hawking-led ascent of Everest. Rumble In The Bronx, First Strike and Mr. Nice Guy, while not without their merits, were a poor imitation of Hong Kong classics like Police Story and Armour Of God. Of course, purists didn't have too many kind things to say about his Western movies, but at least they played to his strengths as both a comedian and a kick-ass king of action cinema.

22:45
Mr Nice Guy
(1997) The legendary Jackie Chan stars as a celebrity chef inadvertently dragged into the battle for incriminating evidence of a drug deal.A chef finds himself right in the soup when he encounters a news reporter with an incriminating videotape. Action-adventure comedy directed by Hong Kong veteran Sammo Hung and starring the Buster Keaton of kung fu, Jackie Chan
Jackie Chan wasn't a big star in the USA at the time he made Mr Nice Guy (aka Yatgo ho yan aka Yige Hao Ren aka No More Mr Nice Guy aka SuperChef). That he's now one of Hollywood's foremost martial arts stars has less to do with this film than with the Rush Hour movies, the first of which he made the year after this picture opened. But if Mr Nice Guy did little to spread the word about Hong Kong's king of kick-ass, it's a nice enough example of the little master's brand of gag-heavy action cinema.

The Piano Teacher
(2001) Isabelle Huppert stars as Erika, a frustrated, middle-aged piano teacher with a taste for hard porn, self-mutilation and voyeurism.Schubert, self-mutilation and porn mix in this tale of human sexuality gone wrong from challenging Austrian director Michael Haneke
It's no surprise that Michael Haneke's seventh film, based on an astonishing book by fellow Austrian Elfriede Jelinek, is controversial, hard-hitting and at times unwatchable. The man behind the unsettling Benny's Video, the grim Funny Games and the challenging Code Unknown has a knack for confrontation and discomfort. No surprise either that the film collected the Grand Prix du Jury at Cannes 2001 to a confused reception of disgust, dumfounded silence and raputurous praise.

Awful Truth
(1937) Cary Grant and Irene Dunne play Jerry and Lucy Warriner, a socialite couple who have decided to get divorced.

This delightful screwball has Grant and Dunne as a couple who can't live with, can't live without each other. They decide there is no trust in their relationship, and the judge grants them a divorce, but sets a ninety day reprieve before it is final, awarding him visitation rights with Mr. Smith, their beloved pooch. They both begin rebound flings, but can't seem to keep out of each other's way. Grant, as in His Girl Friday and Bringing Up Baby, displays his brilliant comic acting, while Dunne matches him for pace and timing. A joy.

A Kentucky militiaman pledges to help the exiled French woman he has fallen in love with. Western adventure starring and produced by John Wayne
Written and directed by journeyman George Waggner, The Fighting Kentuckian is one of those John Wayne westerns it would be easy to overlook. Ignore this picture, however, and you turn your back on a film that not only represents one of the Duke's first significant behind-the-scenes contributions to cinema (Kentuckian was the second feature he produced) but which also happens to have been made slapbang between two of his bona fide classics, Howard Hawks's Red River and John Ford's She Wore A Yellow Ribbon.

The Vikings
(1958) Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis star as two Viking half brothers fighting for the right to rule Northumbria and for the hand of its beautiful Queen.
Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh star in an epic tale of rivalry set in Viking-era Britain. Massive in scale, scope and ambition, it's a triumphant blend of fighting, drinking and good old-fashioned manly action
The Vikings A massive box-office hit on its release in 1958, The Vikings blazed a trail for the grand, historical epic. Even now, decades later, it's a remarkably impressive spectacle built around some vast action sequences and equally large performances by a couple of old Hollywood titans.

21:00
Frequency
(2000) Time-travel thriller starring Jim Caviezel as an NYPD detective still torn apart by the death of his fire-fighter dad.First appearances really can be deceptive. Want proof? Well, look no further than Frequency, the premise for which suggests the shoodiest sort of schlock. It's America in the 1960s, and thanks to intense sunspot activity(!), fire officer Frank Sullivan (Quaid) finds the is able to communicate via a ham radio with his son, 30 years in the future. His grown-up boy, homicide detective John Sullivan (Caviezel, The Thin Red Line), uses this strange set of circumstances to warn his father of his impending death in a warehouse fire. However, saving Frank's life sparks off a fresh chain of events that John discovers will culminate in the murder of his mother (Mitchell). Together, father and son have to make sure that preventing one tragedy won't lead to another one.

Creep
(2004) Franka Potente plays Kate, a party-girl who wakes up late at night on the platform of a locked, deserted Northern Line tube station.A young woman gets stranded in the London Underground at night and finds herself menaced by a deranged psycho. Low-budget British horror starring German actress Franka Potente
Creep cheerfully wallows in its own nastiness. A deliberate throwback to the splatter movies of the 1970s and 1980s, it brings together a host of genre staples - lone woman in peril, subterranean settings, an unstoppable maniac and a variety of gruesome demises - and congeals them around an initially realistic premise. Let's just say audiences will think twice before getting the last tube home after seeing this film.

(2002) Two undercover agents - one in the police force, one in a crime syndicate - get flushed out into the open. Massive Hong Kong hit thriller. Two undercover agents - one in the police force, one in a crime syndicate - get flushed out into the open. Massive Hong Kong hit thriller
Infernal Affairs Infernal Affairs is likely to take you by surprise. It's not, as some have billed it, an Asian re-working of Michael Mann's Heat. Aside from the cop/crook storyline and the appearance of superstars Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Andy Lau (echoing the De Niro/Pacino casting) there is little to compare the two. And unlike Mann's film, this co-directed effort does not hinge on a spectacular shoot-out sequence - which, given its country of origin, is somewhat unusual. Words are its weapons, as it cranks up the tension via good old-fashioned plotting

13:00 Crocodile Dundee (1986)

Hogan, a national institution Down Under, broke into the big time with this film, playing an Outback crocodile hunter who attracts the attention of American journalist Sue Charlton. After she shares his life and dangers in the bush, she invites him to New York, an environment that's alien to Dundee but one he adapts to with charm and humour as he and Charlton slowly fall in love.

14:55 Dark Command (1940)

Entertaining tale from the Wild West about a small-town big shot who terrorises the locals after clashing with the newly elected sheriff.

16:50 The Undefeated (1969)

John Wayne and Rock Hudson star in Andrew V McLaglen's western as Union Colonel John Thomas and Confederate Colonel James Langdon, who clash in the dog days of the Civil War and, after the truce is agreed, take different paths. Langdon leads his men south to Mexico, where they'll join Maximillian's army, while Thomas and his men decide to trap and train wild horses. Inevitably, their paths cross again and, somewhat reluctantly, they join forces to stop Maximillian's plans of conquest.

19:15 Carry on Up The Khyber (Film)

Classic Carry On set in India during the 1890s. Sir Sidney Ruff-Diamond is looking after the British outpost near the Khyber Pass. Protected by the kilted Third Foot and Mouth regiment, you'd think they were safe. But the Khasi of Kalabar has other ideas...

21:00 Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979)

The Pythons' satire on organised religion in general and Christianity in particular is one of cinema's comedy classics. Brian Cohen is mistaken for the Messiah from his birth and, as he grows into adulthood, the Messiah tag sticks. Along the way, he gets involved with a crackpot Judean liberation movement led by John Cleese and finally finds himself a victim of Roman justice, courtesy of a lisping Michael Palin.

22:45 Predator 2 (1990)

The predator is back, now hunting the streets of Los Angeles for his prey. This time the alien has decided to take the feuding drug-dealing gangsters who are threatening to overrun the city as trophies, but when he starts taking out the police as well, tough cop Danny Glover and partners Ruben Blades and Maria Conchita Alonso set on its trail. But they must also contend with special agent Gary Busey, who seems to know what happened to a mercenary patrol in the South American jungle...

00:50 Choses secrètes (2002)

Coralie Revel and Sabrine Seyvecou are two French twenty-something girls without money or connections. But they both have one asset to help them climb the ladder of life - their bodies. Cold-bloodedly pandering to men's desires and obsessions, they seduce their way to the top, enslaving older, richer men along the way with only the equally notorious son of one of them standing in their way

Unfortunately, matters get complicated when the club's owner Steve Hunt falls in love with one of the incarnations, leading to misunderstandings galore.

14:45 Lady from Louisiana (1941)

John Wayne stars in Bernard Vorhaus' film as attorney John Reynolds sent to investigate the Louisiana lottery. He falls for Julie Mirbeau, daughter of the organiser but his investigations sees her father is murdered by one of his own henchmen when the net starts closing in on the racket. Julie, believing Reynolds' work led to her father's death, abadons him and flaunts herself with the killer Blackie Williams. But when she learns the truth, she turns back to Reynolds and agrees to give State's evidence, only for the trial to be dramatically interrupted by a storm that breaks a levee.

16:35 Monte Carlo or Bust (1969)

After the success of Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines, director Ken Annakin and many of the cast of Magnificent... reunited for this similarly themed film. This time, the object is Monte Carlo, with the cars driven by the dastardly Terry-Thomas and Eric Sykes, the dashing Tony Curtis accompanied by the lovely Susan Hampshire, the inventive Peter Cook and Dudley Moore and ex-jailbirds Gert Frobe and Peer Schmidt.

(1941) John Wayne stars in Bernard Vorhaus' film as attorney John Reynolds whose sent to investigate the Louisiana lottery.Big budget action drama sends lawyer John Wayne to clear up corruption in New Orleans before the levee breaks. Also starring Ona Munson and Ray Middleton
John Wayne swaps his trademark chaps and Stetson for a cream suit and jauntily angled chapeau in this lusty legal drama set in 1880s New Orleans. Made by Republic Pictures in 1941, it was the studio's most expensive film to date and it needed to be. Since his breakthrough performance as The Ringo Kid in John Ford's Stagecoach (1939), The Duke's presence - both in Hollywood and on screen - had been building exponentially. In Lady From Louisiana, he's as big and charismatic as director Bernard Vorhaus's lavish vision of the 'Big Easy' itself.

Released in 1969, Monte Carlo Or Bust (a much snappier title than the film's alternate moniker - Those Daring Young Men In Their Jaunty Jalopies) is a loose sequel to the surprise 1965 hit Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines. Whereas that film revolved around a group of wacky competitors attempting to achieve the quickest time in a flying race from London to Paris, this flick features battling automobiles.

Mark Steven Johnson's Daredevil - a comic-book movie about a red-clad, Manhattan-based, blind superhero - wasn't a particularly bad film. It was a dark, edgy, fairly successful take on a lesser-known comic book hero. But it was hobbled by the audience's lack of familiarity with Daredevil by comparison to the bigger budget, wider appeal of Spider-Man. Also, star Ben Affleck was at a point in his career where everything he touched turned to turkey. The one element of the film punters enthused about was the martial arts love interest, Elektra, played by Jennifer Garner - an actor who was on the up.

Queen Bee
(1955) Powerful and engrossing emotional melodrama showcasing Joan Crawford as a ruthless, domineering Southern woman.A wealthy Southern belle takes great pleasure in ruining the lives of anyone who has the misfortune to encounter her. Melodrama starring Joan Crawford
Who isn't scared of Joan Crawford? The woman you'd swear was the inspiration for the witch queen in Snow White And The Seven Dwarves, the anything-but-divine Ms Joan appears to put the willies up everybody. Seemingly specialising in playing wealthy socialites with a thing for alcohol and making everyone feel insignificant, her performance in Queen Bee is classic Crawford. Which isn't to suggest Ranald MacDougall's film is anything special. However, if you had to introduce someone to dear Joan's unique 'charms', this is a very good place to start.

This Island Earth
(1955) Jeff Morrow is Exeter, a mysterious alien scientist from the planet Metaluna, facing destruction by the attacking Zahgonians.Vintage 1950s science-fiction featuring Earth scientists unknowingly working for aliens scheming to escape their dying world
This Island Earth The 1950s cycle of science-fiction produced a slew of memorable films. This Island Earth may not be as sophisticated as The Day The Earth Stood Still (1950), or as novel as The Thing From Another World (1950), or as grand as The War Of The Worlds (1951), or as exotic as Forbidden Planet (1956), or as scary as Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1956), but it's a classic nonetheless. Its status is assured by its quintessential period concerns about atomic power and mass destruction, by its impressive (for the era) special effects and by its inclusion of one of the most memorable movie monsters of the era. With its veiny body, pincer hands, dead eyes and bulging extra-cranial brain matter the Metaluna Mutant is a thing of hokey splendour. (Aliens inspired by it turn up in the Star Wars cantina and in Tim Burton's Mars Attacks!).

Also starring Robert Mitchum and Richard Wildmark. An ambitious senator leads a band of settlers across the burgeoning United States in this western drama starring Kirk Douglas, Robert Mitchum and Richard Widmark
In 1947, Kirk Douglas and Robert Mitchum co-starred in one of the great film noirs, the Jacques Tourneur-directed Out Of The Past, aka Build My Gallows High. Twenty years later, the two celebrated toughs would re-team for The Way West. In the intervening period, Douglas enjoyed tremendous success as both an actor and producer - amongst many other things, he bankrolled and played the title role in Spartacus. Mitchum, by contrast, had appeared in lots of unremarkable movies, fought a thousand brawls, bedded a hundred starlets and served time for marijuana possession.

Crocodile Dundee
(1986) 'That's not a knife. This is a knife' is among cinema's best known quotes, as the eponymous Mick 'Crocodile' Dundee routs a New York mugger. An Aussie hunter lands in New York and has to deal with a different breed of wildlife to that in the Outback. Smash-hit comedy with Paul Hogan
Crocodile Dundee The 'fish-out-of-water' premise was the big thing in 1980s comedy. Beverly Hills Cop, Back To The Future and, most literally, Splash all angled for laughs from the juxtaposition of right person, wrong place and time.

Monty Python's Life of Brian
(1979) The Pythons' satire on organised religion in general and Christianity in particular is one of cinema's comedy classics.History is rewritten and sacred cows are merrily slaughtered as the Python team unleash their take on well-known events from 2,000 years ago
Brian Cohen (Chapman) is just a regular Jew, trying to get by in Roman-occupied Judea. But since the day he was born, when three strange men picked the wrong manger and came bearing gifts, Brian's been the victim of mistaken identity.

Elektra
(2005) Rob Bowman's fantasy thriller stars Jennifer Garner as Elektra, an assassin tutored by the mysterious martial arts master Stick.Spin-off from the Daredevil movie featuring the deadly assassin played by Jennifer Garner. From former X-Files director Rob Bowman

Brother
(1999) Takeshi Kitano directs and stars as a Yakuza exile who comes to LA and ruthlessly sets up an new, multi-ethnic crime family.'Beat' Takeshi Kitano stars as a yakuza exile who comes to LA and ruthlessly sets up an new, multi-ethnic crime family. Sparse, intelligent and shot through with gently sentimental humour
Takeshi Kitano is well-known in the West for his violent Japanese thrillers (Sonatine and Hana-Bi), distinctive, offbeat variants on the genre. In Brother, he creates a sharply-delineated movie that retains his distinctive Spartan, moral qualities but moderates the philosophical qualities of his home-grown fare for more ready consumption.

The Beverly Hillbillies
(1993) Based on the classic TV series, Jim Varney heads up the Clampett family as Jed, who finds oil on his Arkansas farm.Big screen remake of the 1960s TV series about simple Arkansas folk moving to LA after they strike oil
The Beverly Hillbillies After the success of 1991's big screen outing for 'The Addams Family', the Hollywood suits presumably cast their eyes over other hit TV series from the 1960s. Those eyes alighted on 'The Beverly Hillbillies', the culture clash comedy that had run for just shy of a decade after its first appearance on CBS in 1961.

City Beneath the Sea
(1953) Deep sea divers undergo a dangerous mission to recover a fortune in gold from a sunken cargo ship.Deep sea divers undergo a dangerous mission to recover a fortune in gold from a sunken cargo ship. Action adventure starring Robert Ryan, Anthony Quinn, Mala Powers and Suzan Ball. Directed by Budd Boetticher
While today's mega-budget, special effects driven blockbusters may dazzle the eye and draw in big audiences, a lot has to be said for the kitschy charm of the no-budget B-movie. The 1950s and 1960s saw a litany of classic sci-fi/horror/adventure B-movies roll out of Hollywood, their fertile creative environments providing the training ground for future revered filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola.

16:35
Reach for the Sky
(1956) A classic British biopic, telling the true story of WWII fighter pilot ace Douglas Bader, played by Kenneth Moore.A British airman loses his legs but vows to fly again. War drama starring Kenneth More
Reach For The Sky Ask Mike Myers what his favourite film is and you might be surprised by his answer. A die-hard fan of British comedy in general and Peter Sellers in particular, you could be forgiven for thinking the Anglo-Canadian would plump for, say, an early Ealing offering or one of the Pink Panther pictures. But it's not the auld country's comedy the Austin Powers star craves but Reach For The Sky, the WWII biopic of Douglas Bader, the British airman who, in the immortal words of Derek Trotter, "didn't let a little thing like having no legs" stop him contesting the crucial chuckers of the Battle Of Britain.

19:15
Carry on Abroad
(1972) Sid James and the usual suspects head for the Spanish resort of Elsbels, to be met by rep Kenneth Williams in one of the best Carry On films. As the tagline said, it's about "The holiday of a laugh-time". Sid James and a group of British holiday-makers head for the Spanish resort of Elsbels, to be met by rep Kenneth Williams
Carry On Abroad From the moment the key characters are introduced, you know what you're in for. Sid James and Joan Sims play Vic and Cora Flange. Actually, hang on. From the moment you see the words "Carry On..." you know what you're in for. Innuendo, punning, slapstick, campness, unsubtle satire and a whole overflowing suitcase of music-hall hangovers.

The Butterfly Effect
(2004) Ashton Kutcher stars as a troubled man who has the ability to revisit his earlier life - with the result of changing contemporary reality.Ashton Kutcher stars as a troubled man who has the ability to revisit his earlier life - with the result of changing contemporary reality. Sci-fi thriller from the writers of Final Destination 2
The Butterfly Effect So you've got two younger actors playing Ashton Kutcher's character, Evan Treborn, at ages seven and 13 (Lerman and Amadori), before the star even turns up. All the while, Evan's mum is played by Melora Waters, who's only 10 years older than Kutcher. That's all mind-boggling enough, even before getting to the time-bending alternate realities presented in the actual story of The Butterfly Effect.

23:05
Swingers
(1996) Out-of-work actor Jon Favreau has just ended a six year relationship. Luckily, his buddies know just the cure - a trip to Vegas.Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn are a couple of wannabe actors partying their way through the Hollywood and Las Vegas club scene. Wry guys-together comedy written by Favreau and directed by Doug Liman
Swingers Swingers' funding may have been equal to a handful of nickels found down the back of writer Jon Favreau's couch, but its wit and wisdom endure. Part knowing tribute to the sleazy glamour of the Rat Pack, part heartfelt comedy about failing to make it in showbiz, it's one of the sharpest male-oriented comedies of the 1990s. Favreau's endlessly quotable script places the film in an unexpectedly fertile province where the adolescent comedies of John Hughes stumble up against the big, bad world of Withnail And I.

Two Lane Blacktop
(1971) Quintessenial road movie, featuring - perhaps unsurprisingly - car obsessives racing cross-country.Two drifters race their way across America in their souped-up Chevy. Road movie starring Warren Oates, James Taylor and Beach Boy Dennis Wilson, directed by Monte Hellman
Described by Repo Man director Alex Cox as a cult movie par excellence, Two-Lane Blacktop is fully deserving of so lofty a title. Directed by Monte Hellman, the 'lost man' of 1970s American cinema, the film was scripted by Rudy Wurlitzer, author of brilliant if bizarre books like 'Nog' and great if grandiose movies such as Sam Peckinpah's Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid

13:00 City Beneath The Sea (1953)

Robert Ryan and Anthony Quinn star as deep-sea divers Brad Carlton and Tony Bartlett recruited by Dwight Trevor to recover £1m of gold sunk when Port Royal, Jamaica, was hit by an earthquake in 1692. But Trevor only wants them to find the gold - once they uncover it, he intends to dispose of them. Love interest for the leads comes from Terry McBride, feisty owner of a steamer, and bar-singer Venita, while the earthquakes that top and tail the film are prime examples of the special effects of the time.

14:40 Johnny O'Clock (1947)

Dick Powell stars as Johnny O'Clock, a high-class gambler with a shaky casino partnership. When crooked policeman Chuck Blayden tries to move in on the operation but ends up dead, trouble begins.

16:25 All About Eve (1950)

John Cleese plays Donald P Sinclair, a Las Vegas casino owner who decides to set up a special event for his highest rollers. But their friendship starts a vicious circle of gossip that threatens to expose all her secrets.

23:05 Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996)

Mira Nair's film, set in 16th century India, tells the story of two young girls, friends who are divided at first by birth and later by sex, as one learns the art of lovemaking from the Kama Sutra and comes to the notice of a local prince - who is married to her friend.

13:00 Theodora Goes Wild (1936)

Irene Dunn plays prim schoolmistress Theodora Lynn of the small Connecticut town Lynnfield, named after her ancestors. But to liven up her dull life, she secretly writes a racy novel based on the town which, when serialised in the town paper under a nom de plume, creates a local scandal. But when it is published as a book and becomes a national bestseller, Lynn is exposed and ostracised until the town discovers it's become a literary hotspot for tourists.

14:55 The Sun Shines Bright (1953)

John Ford's favourite film features the same character, Judge Priest, that appeared in his eponymous 1934 film. This time the role of the upright small town lawyer Judge William Priest is taken by Charles Winniger, who sticks up for the ordinary people of the town, much to the disgust of the rich mansion owners who still miss the days of the Confederacy. Among the unpopular decisions Priest takes are to help a woman who keeps a house of ill repute, preventing the lynching of an innocent young black man and organising a decent funeral for a prostitute. But his position comes under threat when hotshot Yankee lawyer Horace Maydew stands against him for election.

16:45 The Day Will Dawn (1942)

Gripping wartime thriller with Hugh Williams as Colin Metcalfe, a British journalist working in Norway who finds himself hunted by the Germans when he uncovers a secret U-boat base. Deborah Kerr co-stars as the daughter of a Norwegian sea captain helping the Brits combat the Nazi menace.

18:50 Life is Beautiful (1998)

Roberto Benigni's multi-award winning film stars the director as Guido, a hotel waiter in a small pre-war Italian town, who falls helplessly for and marries Dora. They have a son Giosué and all seems perfect until, in 1945, the Nazis begin to round up Italian Jews and send them to the camps. Guido and family are among them and, in the camp, Guido constructs an elaborate game to comfort and protect his son from the horrors that surround them; it is also a game that may save Giosué's life.

21:00 Independence Day (1996)

Roland Emmerich's science fiction blockbuster sees aliens reach Earth. And they're clearly hostile: their plan is to suck the planet of all its resources, leave behind a burnt cinder circling the sun, and move on. Planting giant ships above the world's major cities, they unleash destruction on an unprecedented scale. All attempts to fight back are met by hordes of fighter craft until pilot Steven Hiller manages to down one and capture the pilot. In tandem, scientist David Levinson, having worked out their purpose, also works out a way to destroy them but he and Hiller need a spacecraft: which brings them to a secret base near Las Vegas...

23:40 The Blair Witch Project (1999)

One of the most successful horror films of all time, with a simple but eerie premise: three student filmmakers set off into the woods near Burkitsville, Maryland, in search of the truth behind the legends of the Blair Witch. They never returned but, a year later, their footage was found.

01:15 Old Joy (2006)

Director/writer Kelly Reichardt's film is deceptively gentle drama about a friendship renewed. Kurt and Mark, two friends who lost touch and decide to re-kindle their relationship with a weekend trek through Oregon's mountains. They talk, with Mark concerned about imminent fatherhood while Kurt is more meditative, but at the end, will the bond be re-forged?

Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye
(1950) James Cagney stars as Ralph Cotter, a violent career criminal who breaks out of prison and tries to make his way back to the top.Neglected film noir, in which Cagney gives one of the most savage, bloated and theatrical performances ever as Ralph Cotter, a criminal of such amoral excess that the film will hardly contain him: like a Marlowe anti-hero, a Tamburlaine or a Jew of Malta, perhaps - he threatens to burst from the frame and start to pursue his grubby plots in the real world. And what plots. He's even got the nerve to blackmail crooked policemen (though an heiress - played by Carter - gives him some trouble). There's no room for any romantic interest, though: this is about boys' games - dark, dirty stuff for which they go to hell.

Marvin's Room
(1996) Jerry Saks film looks at the effect of terminal illness on family relationships. The effect of terminal illness on family relationships is a subject exploited by many Hollywood films, usually to powerful and prize-winning effect. This, adapted from a successful Broadway play, is no exception
The painful story of two sisters. Bessie (Keaton) has stayed at the family home in Florida to care for her bedridden father. Lee (Streep) has forged an independent but thankless life as a single mother in Ohio. They are brought back together when Bessie is diagnosed with leukaemia, and the bone marrow of a relative could be her only chance of survival.

22:45
The Missionary
(1982) Comedy from Michael Palin. In 1906, a missionary returns to England and founds a Mission for Fallen Women in the East End of London. This was the film that established Palin as the cuddly favourite of the Monty Python alumni. He's as endearing as ever playing a holy innocent, back from spreading the word in the colonies, who's dispatched to save fallen women in Victorian London's East End. They prove to be a handful, not least his formidable patron, Smith. Stalwarts like Howard and Elliott, plus full costume-drama aesthetics, add to some extremely English comedy. Loncraine has plumped for the feel of Victorian pornography - you know, fat-bottomed girls unlacing big pants in palm-infested boudoirs. His film is almost as funny.

After a stint as a stripper and barmaid respectively, they take comfort in each others' arms and embark on an audacious plan to avenge the injustices wreaked on them by men by shagging their way up the corporate ladder.

Private Hell 36
(1954) Don Siegel's thriller stars Steve Cochran and Howard Duff as two cops assigned to track down a vast sum of money stolen in a hold-up.Temptation seems set to corrupt two detectives when they find stolen cash worth $300,000. Thriller starring and scripted by Ida Lupino, and directed by Don Siegel
Don Siegel made two important films in 1954. Riot In Cell Block 11 was a superb jail-bound story that woke Hollywood up to the fact that this former editor had it in him to make compelling features. Although less widely praised, Private Hell 36 also represented a breakthrough for the two-time Oscar winner. Hired to shoot the film by his good friend the actress, director and writer Ida Lupino, Siegel would have a tough time appeasing his leading lady and her husband and collaborator Collier Young. When he came to write his autobiography, 'A Siegel Film', the man who'd go on to 'make' Clint Eastwood would all but dismiss this early B-picture. Like many an artist before and after him, Siegel was to prove a lousy judge of his own work.

All About Eve
(1950) Margo Channing is the acid-tongued star of screen and stage who takes the young, innocent, mousey Eve Harrington under her wing.Bette Davis excels as an aging diva in the six times Oscar Winner. Sit back and 'Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night'
Davis gives one of the performances of her career portraying aging stage diva Margot Channing with a painful air of authenticity: the camp star, still awesome but aware of the ravages of time and the threat of younger actresses snapping at her heels.

17:10
Bus Stop
(1956) Marilyn Monroe turns in one of her best performances as a saloon singer who becomes the object of cowboy Don Murray's affections.Uneasy and spiky musical, with an eye-openingly adept performance from Marilyn Monroe
Bus Stop Monroe plays a Phoenix cabaret singer with eyes set on Hollywood who hops on a bus to avoid the crazed attentions of rookie rodeo cowboy Murray. But undeterred he sets out to make an honest woman of her. Which is weird, because if you reduced his costume to chaps and a posing pouch he couldn't come across any more gay than he does already.

18:55
Gallipoli
(1981) Peter Weir's epic war film concentrates on the ill-fated Australian invasion of the Turkish coast at Gallipoli.Highly effective retelling of the Anzac attempt to take control of Gallipoli in Turkey during the First World War. Peter Weir directs a sprightly Mel Gibson
Inevitably, the events depicted in Weir's intimate epic of World War I mean more to the antipodeans for whom it is part of their culture and history. But Williamson's screenplay makes sure that the human element is equally important in the presentation of the two lads, Archy (Lee) and Frank (Gibson), who join the army and become rivals (as sprinters) and friends.

21:00
A Knight's Tale
(2001) Heath Ledger is a lowly squire who replaces his dead master at a tournament and, winning, decides he'll go for the big tournament in London.Novel attempt to combine medieval jousting with WWF wrestling culture starring Heath Ledger. Silly, predictable and naive but good fun
Hollywood - and America - is obsessed with yarns about the underdog making good. Determination to achieve - and become stinking rich and famous - is the driving 'virtue'. Such upward mobility is at the core of A Knight's Tale. But despite this well-worn cliché, this film from writer-director Brian Helgeland (career high: LA Confidential screenplay; career low The Postman screenplay) is saved by the sheer ridiculous audacity of giving medieval jousting a WWF-style makeover.

23:30
Blade II
(2002) A mutated race of vampires, the Reapers, are killing both humans and vampires and must be stopped before they gain too much power.Wesley Snipes reprises his role as the super-human comic-book vampire hunter in this stylish action-horror directed by Guillermo Del Toro
Blade II picks up where 1998's fabulous Blade left off. Well, it is set two years later, but it ties up what Blade (Snipes) has been up to - he's been looking for Whistler (Kristofferson), his mentor and armourer, who didn't actually die as the first film indicated. In true comic book fashion, he's alive - but only just, having "turned" and then been kept in a vat by nasty vampires in Prague. Blade liberates him then it's back to business as usual. Except it's not. Rather than simply continuing his war against vampires, Blade is actually recruited by them to help battle a common enemy. A new strain of vampires has emerged, 'Reapers', who feed on both humans and vampires.

Zatoichi
(2003) Takeshi 'Beat' Kitano directs, scripts and stars in this martial arts adventure as Zatoichi, a character rarely seen in the west.Period drama from 'Beat' Takeshi Kitano. A blind master swordsman and a desperate ronin get involved in a gang conflict in 19th century rural Japan
Zatôichi is a good-natured homage to the samurai films of Akira Kurosawa, and connects neatly with that cinematic sub-genre of the taciturn wanderer who is a master fighter. Kurosawa's Yojimbo featured the Man With No Name, who provided the model for Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy; the character Zatôichi (Kitano) conforms to a similar type, being known throughout simply as "the masseur". In fact, Zatôichi himself pre-dates Yojimbo - he's a well-known character from the books of Japanese author Kan Shimozawa, and was brought to life previously in film and on TV between 1962 and 1989.

Frank Capra's most successful comedies are often criticised for being too sentimental. Beneath that sugar coating however, there's often a deeper tension. More than merely championing the underdog on the path to happiness, his film's worldview can be deeply cynical, seeing the individual as a cog in the gears of big industry, a fate which only the stars (notably Jimmy Stewart) ultimately manage to escape here.

It's a schoolboy premise - what would you do if you found yourself stuck in another era? It's also the premise Michael Crichton used in his bestseller, which began its inevitable transformation to the big screen before it was even published in 2000. Crichton is no stranger to adolescent high concepts, of course. What would it be like if dinosaurs were alive today is another one of his.

Along Came A Spider
(2001) A forensic psychologist teams up with a Secret Service agent to catch the kidnapper of a senator's daughter.Morgan Freeman reprises his role as Detective Alex Cross from Kiss The Girls in this kidnapping thriller
Along Came A Spider Detective thrillers always require the suspension of one's disbelief, and this is especially true of Along Came A Spider. However, it would be churlish to criticise the film for its highly implausible plot, when there are so many other things one could criticise it for. Managing to pack several decades worth of cop clichés into under two hours, it also boasts dull performances from normally proficient actors, clunky dialogue and some confusing direction by Tamahori, whose American movies have never matched the promise of his debut, Once Were Warriors.

Jimmy Stewart and Jean Arthur star.A family of eccentrics take on a wealthy tycoon when love strikes their respective daughter and son. Jimmy Stewart and Jean Arthur star with Frank Capra directing

The Desperadoes
(1943) Wanted outlaw Cheyenne Rogers comes to town to rob a bank, but when he arrives he runs into old friend Steve Upton, the town sheriff.A gunslinger sets out to rob a bank, only to discover that it's already being held-up by someone else. Routine western starring Randolph Scott and Glenn Ford
Interesting bloke, Glenn Ford. The fastest gun in the Hollywood west (he could draw his pistol in 0.4 of a second), the Welsh-Canadian actor fought in both World War II and Vietnam, with the French awarding him the Medal of Honour for his courageous acts during the European war.

The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill, But Came Down A Mountain After the massive success of Four Weddings And A Funeral, Hugh Grant appeared in this comedy which pitched cartography against a Welsh town's indomitable civic pride. Nicely written and appropriately cast, it's an enjoyably gentle farce reminiscent of post-war feelgood fare, and populated by a vivid bunch of likeably loopy eccentrics.

Cloak and Dagger
(1946) Fritz Lang spy thriller starring Gary Cooper as a mild-mannered American physicist who is sent on a mission into Europe to rescue a nuclear scientist.Next to Douglas Sirk, of all the refugees from Europe Lang adapted best to America and like Sirk found work in the studios initially attractive. This espionage story remains one of his most engrossing movies, despite Cooper who seems somewhat miscast and probably found Lang unsympathetic. He plays an atomic scientist drafted into spying in Switzerland then Italy towards the end of WW II to see how far Germany has advanced in atomic research. The great sequence is a tough fight conducted in silence, but there are other good things along the way, not least the enchanting Palmer and Polito's atmospheric photography.

15:10
Human Desire
(1954) Railroad worker Carl Buckley asks his wife Vicki to beg her lover to use his influence to save his job.Ford and Grahame had worked so well under Lang's direction in the previous year's The Big Heat that Columbia's bosses rushed to capitalize, hiring the trio to work together again in this remake of Jean Renoir's 1938 classic, La Bête Humaine. Ford plays a railroad engineer, back from the Korean War, who gets mixed up with Crawford's wife Grahame. It's a torrid affair that results in murder, but Lang has skimped on exploring the depths of their emotional turmoil. Instead he makes do with the suggestion inherent in his footage of steam trains. You can't help thinking that they're propelled by so much hot air.

Porco Rosso

A film that evolved slowly in Hayao Miyazaki's imagination (at various stages it appeared in manga, then was mooted as a short in-flight film), Porco Rosso sees the filmmaker indulging his love of old planes, notably flying boats, and Italy and the Mediterranean of a bygone era. Despite its unique contrivance of having a bipedal pig (snout, floppy ears, dashing 'tash) in a world of ordinary humans, this is no whimsy. And despite it being more readily humorous and playful than his later films like Spirited Away, it's far from trite, with its themes of remorse and dismay at the rise of fascism.

Crocodile Dundee II
(1988) Paul Hogan returns as Mick 'Crocodile' Dundee in John Cornell's sequel to the hit comedy original.Further adventures of Paul Hogan's Mick 'Crocodile' Dundee, this time pursued from New York back to the Australian Outback by vengeful drug dealers
Crocodile Dundee II One of the common mistakes when making a sequel to a smash-hit film is the assumption that because people came out in droves the first time, they're all gagging to go back again. This sorry sequel to a one-joke one-off is a classic example of such optimistic (ie greedy) thinking.

Ride With The Devil Although not quite as magnificent as the other American masterpiece of the 90s, The Thin Red Line, Ang Lee's movie shares the blend of poetry and realism, rooted in a concern for history and humanity that characterizes Malick's work.

Disco Pigs
(2001) An outstanding teen drama about inseparable friends whose relationship is threatened by the onset of adulthood. An outstanding teen drama about inseparable friends whose relationship is threatened by the onset of adulthood. Expertly written, acted and directed - and mercifully cliché free
Disco Pigs The premise for 24-year-old Kirsten Sheridan's debut film sounds like it was lifted from the Nirvana song 'Drain You'. Two babies, born seconds apart, meet in a hospital and forge an inseparable connection. They grow up to be Pig (Murphy) and Runt (Cassidy): teenagers in perfect sync with each other. They live next door to each other, they have the same kooky rituals and they go to sleep holding hands through a secret hole in their bedroom wall.
