Mediaset calls for reform of Serie A rights auction

Mediaset has described proposals for the 2018-20 Serie A rights auction unbalanced.

The Italian broadcaster says the current call for proposals issued by the Italian football league violate the so-called ‘no single buyer’ rule of the Melandri decree.

Mediaset has filed a complaint to the Authority for Competition and Market.

It believes current proposals would penalise the majority of Italian football fans by forcing them into taking out a subscription to what it calls a “mandatory commercial offer”.

Package D comes in for particular criticism. It contains 324 matches – 30 per cent more than in other packages – and featuring teams from Roma, Lazio, Fiorentina, Genoa and Bologna. “Their supporters are obliged to purchase the only existing commercial offer, even if it were to result in a new subscription to add to the favourite in previous years or, even more objectionable, the forced migration from one subscription.

Other complaints include the reduction in the number of packages and the €400 million starting price.
