Russian channel Tsargrad goes off air

November 24, 2017 09.31 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Russian Orthodox-oriented channel Tsargrad will cease TV broadcasting and become an internet-only service on December 1.

Kommersant reports that the channel, which is backed by Konstantin Malofeev, saw its internet audience increase 10-fold between August 2016 and October 2017, with the number of visits exceeding 13 million.

Furthermore, the average age of viewers who accessed the service online was 35, compared to 65+ for those who watched it on cable and satellite services such as NTV-Plus, Akado and Orion.

In total, the channel has had 20 million viewers since August 2016.

Tsargard was launched in 2015 and covers cultural and political news.

Last month it was reported that the channel was in talks to merge with Spas, a channel operated by the Russian Orthodox Church.
