Japan gears up for 8K Olympics in ISDB-S3 standard
NOVEMBER 14, 2017 EUROPE/LONDON BY JÖRN KRIEGER

In preparation for the Olympic Games, the Japanese broadcasting world is getting ready for 8K Ultra HD TV.

US hardware manufacturer SiTune Corporation has successfully tested its tuners for 8K UHD satellite TV in line with the ISDB-S3 standard. The R&S SLG satellite load generator from German technology company Rohde & Schwarz generated the ISDB-S3 signals.

In the interoperability test, the SiTune STN6528 tuner received and demodulated the ISDB-S3 signal. The tuner was operated as a plug-in board on an SC1501 demodulator evaluation board from Socionext.

The multichannel R&S SLG signal generator from Rohde & Schwarz used for the tests simultaneously generates up to 32 satellite transponders in real-time. It can be operated in the 250 MHz to 3225 MHz frequency range with a modulation bandwidth of 500 MHz. Customers have a choice of transmission standards including DVB-S, DSNG, DVB-S2, DVB-S2 wideband, DVB-S2X (also with channel bonding), ISDB-S and ISDB-S3.

SiTune Corporation wants to start mass production of its ISDB-S3 tuner which supports satellite, cable and terrestrial reception by the second quarter of 2018.

In 2018, Japanese public broadcaster NHK aims to roll out the ISDB-S3 standard used for the 8K transmissions. It plans to cover the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea in the new video format followed by the Olympics 2020 in Tokyo.
