Digi corruption case goes to court

August 24, 2017 11.13 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Romania’s leading pay-TV operator RCS&RDS (Digi) has been taken to court in a €3.5 million case involving alleged bribery and money laundering.

According to Business Review, the Romanian National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) has also taken to court a number of individuals, some of who were at RCS&RDS at that time. They include Ioan Bendei, then the administrator and a shareholder of RCS&RDS; Alexandru Oprea, then the general director and president of the council of administration of RCS&RDS; and Serghei Bulgac, then the general director of RCS&RDS.

The accused also include Dumitru Dragomir, the former president of the Romanian Professional Football League (LFP).

According to prosecutors, between April 2009-2011 Dragomir, in his position of LPF president, with the support of others, requested €3.5 million from Bendei.

He eventually received €3.1 million, with the money being disguised as the payments part of a contract of association in 2009 for the funding of Crystal Palace Ballrooms.
