After the incidents that forced CONMEBOL execs to postpone the game last weekend, the second leg of this tie is set to be played next month
A meeting held today at CONMEBOL's headquarters in Paraguay revealed that the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final will still be played, despite Boca Juniors' interest to see River Plate being punished over the incidents that led to the game's cancellation this weekend.
Football's governing body in South America informed of its decision via a press release, admitting that their rules allowed CONMEBOL to have the game played anywhere but in Argentina.
The game was cancelled after River Plate fans attacked Boca Juniors' bus en route to the Estadio Monumental. Radical River fans attacked the bus with rocks and tear gas, even hurting Pablo Pérez's left eye, which hardened the stance of Boca footballers, who refused to play 24 hours later.
According to CONMEBOL's press release, the game will be held on December 8 or 9. The venue is yet to be decided by the entity in the next few days. CONMEBOL will handle all traveling expenses, including flights and hotels for both teams. Once a venue is determined, football's governing body in South America will make security arrangements with local authorities, but fans are expected to be allowed into the game.
Regarding the venue, ESPN Argentina has leaked that the match could be played in the United Arab Emirates or in Qatar. The reason for such an exotic venue is simple: the game will be held just days before the FIFA Club World Cup, and the intention would be to have the Copa Libertadores champion staying over in the Middle East to play in that tournament.
Other possible venues include CONMEBOL's home: Paraguay. According to the Commander of the Paraguayan National Police, Walter Vázquez, local authorities are already making arrangements to have the game played there.
River Plate seems open to play in any venue CONMEBOL finds suitable, but Boca Juniors keeps pushing for a default win, such as the one that saw them lose to River Plate in 2015 due to a similar incident inside Boca's stadium.
