YouView plans multi device strategy
July 29, 2013 10.38 Europe/London By Julian Clover

YouView PartnersYouView is planning an expansion beyond its current terrestrial PVR with plans to offer its service across a range of devices including connected TVs, smart phones and tablets.

Shareholders that include Britain’s public service broadcasters, including the BBC and ITV, and telcos BT and TalkTalk have begun discussions ahead of the end of the current partnership agreement in March next year.

Quoting sources close to the discussions, the Financial Times, said the multidevice strategy was particularly important to the broadcasters.

The proposal will stir memories of the failed Project Kangaroo that planned to united the PSB’s catch-up TV services, before being banned by the Competition Commission. The assets were later sold and the technology emerged as the now defunct SeeSaw.

Early plans by YouView to offer a PVR-less box have been quietly forgotten amid the original project delays and boardroom disputes, but with Sky and Virgin both running online TV portals, it is an area that YouView cannot leave behind.
