Three new comedies for Gold

UKTV has given the go-ahead to three new titles for its comedy channel Gold. It’s part of a significant expansion of original commissions for the channel that will see a second raft of titles announced in the early summer.
Richard Watsham, UKTV’s Director of Commissioning, said they all had the potential to become returning series: “The first three of our new commissions for Gold offer a fantastic range of different stories and comic styles. Between them they will start to establish a new tone of voice for our origination. We’ve deliberately targeted scripts that play to Gold viewers’ known love of classic British sitcom but they’re also modern, sharply written pieces which deliver on our promise of high quality, world-class comedy.”
UKTV has turned to a variety of writers for the series, including Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais. The multi-award winning writing team behind Porridge, The Likely Lads and Auf Wiedersehen Pet have penned Henry IX, King of the United Kingdom, a contemporary story of a middle-aged man who just happens to be the reigning monarch.
Marley’s Ghosts is described as a distinctive piece about a woman who can talk to the dead, including her late husband and lover. It’s written by Daniel Peacock.
First-time sitcom writers Gareth Gwynn and John-Luke Roberts are behind Bull, the story of the owner of an antique shop and its dysfunctional stuff.
Each commission goes into production during spring and summer for transmission later in 2015 and early 2016.
