Serbia considers public TV funding
October 10, 2013 11.21 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Serbia’s RTS needs at least €100 million a year to function as a public service broadcaster, according to its director, Aleksandar Tijanic.

Quoted in the local media, he added that unless it receives €15 million from marketing and €85-90 million from subscriptions and the state budget, it cannot fulfill its responsibilities.

The Ministry of Culture and Information has started a public debate on a draft law on public broadcasting in Serbia.

The draft envisages two solutions, the first of which would see 80% of funds allocated to RTS and 20% to Radio Television Vojvodina (RTV) and second a 75/25 split between the two broadcasters.

In each case, funding would be obtained from the state budget, commercial and other revenues.

The government has to submit amendments to the proposed law by June 30, 2015.

Public broadcasting in Serbia is undertaken by RTS and RTV.
