Samsung and LG to join Google TV in 2012
10.24 Europe/London, November 23, 2011 By Robert Briel

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are expected to launch Google TV next year. But only LG will show its models at the 2012 CES in Las Vegas.

Yoon Boo-keun, chief of Samsung’s TV division, said on Tuesday to the Korean press that the company is in final talks with Google about when to release the hot new gadget. “We will announce the launch date at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.”

Samsung already showed a prototype of Google TV at last year’s CES, but did not bring any sets to the market. Only Sony actually sold Google TVs, but the sets met with a lukewarm response from consumers.

“Samsung is a very important partner of Google’s and we announced a Google TV partnership earlier in the year. We’re excited about working with Samsung on Google TV in the months ahead, and we look forward to bringing great products to consumers in 2012,” a Google spokesman said in an e-mailed statement to the Los Angeles Times.

Meanwhile, LG Electronics said it is ready to bring its Google TV set to the market next year and will show its first models at the CES 2012.

Google recently introduced the Google TV 2.0 update, which runs the Honeycomb variant of Android and features TV-optimised apps and ‘new look’ YouTube channels.

Not every manufacturer is pleased with the progress Google TV is (not) making. Logitech recently said it is dropping its Google TV products.
