Russia bullish on HD and Ultra HD

January 11, 2016 09.31 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Demand for Ultra HD content is likely to increase significantly in Russia in the next two to four years.

At the same time, HD is growing in popularity despite the country’s economic difficulties.

Quoting Dmitry Solodovnikov, the press secretary at MTS, ComNews reports user base of MTS’s basic digital TV package, which includes 26 HD channels, grew by 96% last year.

Meanwhile, the cable operator ER Telecom has noted that the HD viewership of its Dom.ru service increased by 35% last year, while the DTH platform NTV-Plus posted an increase of 20%, with further growth of 15-20% projected for this year.

Elsewhere, the cable operator Akado Telekom recently claimed that over 30% of its digital TV subscribers watched HD channels.

Despite the fact that HD content is still not widely available and ownership of HD reception equipment lower than might have been expected, the local industry expects growth in the HD market to continue this year.

It is also bullish about the prospects of Ultra HD, though in the medium to long term. NTV-Plus is already working on a channel in the format and ER Telecom, too, is active in the area.

Both Rostelecom and VimpelCom are also considering offering their viewers Ultra HD content in the future, while Orion Express believes the time is not yet right to do so.
