Rival says Dutch Radio 1 could manage on less money

October 14th,

“I’ve worked long enough in Hilversum to know that there are 200 million euro savings that could easily be made,” says Paul van Gessel in the magazine Adformatie. In the past he has worked at NOS Radio 1 News, and since 2007 has been editor-in-chief of its commercial rival BNR. It’s not the first time he has criticized Radio 1. According to Mr Van Gessel, Radio 1 could easily manage with half the money if the system is changed. “Radio 1 employs 350 people, BNR just 45.”

While Hilversum awaits cuts in public broadcasting, BNR is investing in the future with new programming and jingles. “We are exploring the possibilities of a magazine and want to increase interactivity on our website. We want to reach one million unique visitors per month.”

With these new initiatives, BNR will be less dependent on the sale of commercial airtime, because according to the BNR editor-in-chief it’s currently too dependent on commercials. “This vulnerability is particularly acute during the [financial] crisis.”
