Poland eyes new info channel
December 19, 2012 09.00 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Poland will see the launch of a new information-based channel in Q2 next year.

Several local reports say it will be known as Telewizja Niezalezna (‘Independent TV’) and operated by a company of the same name.

Its outlook will be conservative and it will be distributed by cable and satellite, a licence for which will shortly be requested from the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT).

The new channel will be headed by Piotr Barelkowski, the founder of the business channel TV Biznes, with Bronislaw Wildstein, a former head of public broadcaster TVP, its editor in chief.

Its aim would be to counter what is sees as propaganda and censorship in the Polish media.

Telewizja Niezalezna is backed by the newspaper Gazeta Polska and further details about the channel will be revealed at a press conference this Friday (December 21).
