Poland awards DTT licences

KRRiT_buildingThe Polish National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) has granted licences to the public broadcaster TVP and Lux Veritas Foundation to operate a children’s and socio-religious channel respectively on the country’s first DTT multiplex (MUX-1).

Both companies will pay their licence fee in installments and start broadcasting once the president of the Office of Electronic Communications (UKE) issues them with frequencies.

They should be on air no later than April 28 next year.

The social-religious channel licence award is a major victory for the Lux Vertitas Foundation, which garnered huge public support, especially among the more conservative and religious sections of the population, to secure its channel TV Trwam a slot on MUX-1 that it had been previously denied.

In winning the slot, the Foundation beat off rival bids from Wieczorna.pl and Media Works, with the latter withdrawing its offer on March 5.

TVP, on the other, overcame a rival bid from Cyfrowy Polsat, which was hoping to secure a place on MUX-1 for its proprietary channel Polsat Kids.

Instead, TVP will occupy it with a new channel named TVP ABC and aimed at children aged 4-12.
