N.DS wins Claro’s Latino encryption?
By Chris Forrester

Local reports, unconfirmed by N.DS, say that encryption specialist N.DS has won Claro’s pay-TV security protection for its DTH operations over Chile, Peru and Paraguay. The reports suggest that NDS’s VideoGuard is being used to replace Conax. Claro is a subsidiary of Carlos Slim’s América Móvil and uses the Amazonas satellite for distribution.

According to official statistics, Claro has 415,000 Pay-TV subscribers in Chile, a figure that includes its cable and DTH operations. In Peru, Claro has about 215,000 subs, although that also includes cable viewers. Paraguay’s DTH system only launched this year.

The larger question now is whether this move means that Kudelski’s Nagra CAS card is also going to be elbowed out in other América Móvil markets, notably Brazil (where it operates via the Embratel/StarOne operation) and central America/Puerto Rico where pay-TV is available via Intelsat’s 1R craft and Americom’s AMC21 satellite.
