Murdoch in the race for Italy’s La7

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp is in the race to acquire La7 from Telecom Italia Media, according to local news report. Berlusconi looks like being out of it.
TIM’s La7 is the only national general entertainment broadcaster that is not part of Berlusconi’s Mediaset group or the state broadcaster RAI.
The incumbent telco is selling all its broadcast operations as part of a restructuring of the company. Apart from La7 Ti m also owns MTV Italia with a national digital terrestrial network.
Acquiring La7 and MTV would make sense for News Corp, since this would boost its market position for its premium Sky Italia platform, which is in competition with Mediaset’s FTA and premium businesses.
At the moment, Sky Italia has a single FTA channel in the country called Cielo with limited distribution. Acquiring La7 would improve the balance between the two broadcasting
