MTG has announced a major strategic decision affecting its operations in Latvia.

Under it, the channels LNT and TV3 will change their legal status at the beginning of 2014, switching from FTA to paid-for services.

According to Baiba Zuzena, CEO of MTG’s Latvian TV and radio operations, this will allow the two channels to increase the amount of original, Latvian-produced content they show by around a third.

At the same time, the change will only affect the 6-7% of viewers who watch the channels for free online and they are being urged to switch to the most suitable cable, satellite or pay-DTT packages.

Zuzena added that the decision had been influenced by a number of factors including the slow recovery in the ad market following the economic crisis, which began in 2008.

They will allow LNT and TV3 to operate in more predictable circumstances and should benefit viewers.
