More Comedy for Russians?
11.42 Europe/London, February 7, 2012 By Chris Dziadul

Russia could see the launch of a localised version of Comedy Central in the first quarter of this year.

According to Kommersant, representatives of the channel, which is operated by Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN), have already met with MTS and Akado, which account for 12% and 4% of Russia’s pay-TV market respectively.

However, they will only be able to enter into substantive talks once the channel has secured a licence from Roskomnadzor.

Comedy programming is becoming increasingly popular in Russia and accounted for 13.9% of total airtime in 2010, or over double the 6.2% registered in 2005.

CTC and TNT allocate the most airtime to the genre.
