Mobile TV surges in Spain

The number of mobile TV subscribers in Spain grew by 28% to 638,340 in the first quarter, according to data published by the country’s regulatory body CMT.

Much more modest quarter-on-quarter increases were recorded by satellite TV (+0.7% to 1,785,905), cable TV (+4.2% to 1,376,364), IPTV (+1.4% to 866,360) and DTT (+5.5% to 366,812) over the same period.

The total number of pay-TV subscribers at the end of Q1 stood at 4,395,441, or 99,007 more than three months earlier.

There was a surprising fall in the number of football pay-per-view contracts in Q1, down from 623,503 to 527,847. Movie contact also fell, from 2,213,973 to 2,204,462, as did those for other genres, almost halving from 354,343 to 179,757.
Sogecable remained the leading provider of pay-TV services in Q1, its 1,787,149 subscribers giving it a 40.7% market share.
It also had the highest revenues, the €250.17 million it posted accounting to well over half the €422.77 million for the pay-TV as a whole.

Mobile TV services in Spain are provided by Movistar,Vodafone and Orange, with Movistar claiming an 88.5% market share in the first quarter.
