Mexico’s Totalmovie launches global OTT video service
By Jamie Beach December 5th, 2012

Totalmovie, part of Mexico’s Grupo Salinas, has revealed a new over-the-top (OTT) video service which combines linear channels, VOD, catch-up TV from the cloud and network PVR services, and which will be available in multiple emerging markets around the world in the coming months.

Presenting the new service at the TV Connect Latin America event in São Paolo (Brazil) yesterday, Totalmovie’s Executive Chairman Samer Salameh said that the service will offer unlimited access to linear TV and an extensive catalogue of movies and television series from leading Hollywood, local and independent studios, including Disney, Sony and Mexico’s TV Azteca.

He also demonstrated the user interface at yesterday’s event, with channels streamed live via the Akamai Content Distribution Network from Totalmovie’s Los Angeles lab.

Technological highlights include a one-half to one-second channel change time, claimed to be around 50% faster than that offered by most cable and satellite TV services.

Totalmovie is currently contracting with strategic distribution partners to expedite the roll-out of its new TV service in major emerging markets worldwide. These partners include major telecommunications companies, Internet service providers and pay-TV firms around the world.

The service will be available on PCs via a Web browser, and on Internet-connected devices including TVs, mobile phones, tablets, streaming players and video gaming consoles.

Editor’s note: Totalmovie already has some form in this space: it’s Latin American OTT service currently has just under 2mn registered users, and receives 5mn unique visitors to its website every month, making it the second-largest premium on-demand video service in Latin America.

Whether it can make this new service a success in other emerging markets beyond Latin America remains to be seen, but it has certainly amassed considerable technological know-how and experience already.
