Major TV shake up looms in Portugal
September 5, 2012 11.20 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Portuguese commercial stations SIC and TVI have submitted a joint proposal to the government calling for the privatisation of the public broadcaster’s second channel RTP2.

At the same time, reports DN, they have proposed the end of advertising on its first channel RTP1 and the launch of two DTT channels.

The latter would be run (one each) by SIC and TVI and available for free on the DTT platform.

Initially, they would not carry advertising, in accordance with the principle of public service broadcasting, and be financed to the tune of €140-150 million a year by the State via receiver licence fees.

The SIC and TVI have in addition proposed tripartite channels with RTP in order to reduce operating costs.

Their proposals for RTP differ from those previously considered by the government.
