LG claims Smart TV first for Verizon FiOS
By Jamie Beach December 3rd, 2012

South Korean electronics manufacturer LG has introduced a new app for its 2012 Smart TVs and Blu-ray disk players which allows US telco Verizon to deliver 75 broadcast channels to its FiOS TV customers without needing a separate set-top box.

Verizon customers who subscribe to both FiOS TV and Internet service can access the application via the Smart World section on LG’s Smart TV interface.

Among the 75 channels on offer are HBO, Food Network, NFL Network, TBS, VH1 and others, offering content for all age groups and preferences.

LG Smart TV owners also can access FiOS TV’s Flex View, which offers more than 25,000 on-demand movies and show titles for purchase or rent on any Internet-connected device, whether at home on a TV or PC, or on-the-go on a mobile device.

Verizon had reached 4.6mn customers for its FiOS TV service by the end of the third quarter of this year, having added 119,000 subs in the three-month period.

Editor’s view: This is becoming a hot trend in the world of pay-TV – enabling subscribers to access linear broadcasts on a Smart TV without needing a dedicated set-top box.

The advantages for operators are clear – they do not need to provide their customer with an expensive set-top box, which has to be subsidised by a lengthy and expensive contract.

At present this approach usually involves the Smart TV being a “satellite” of the home’s main STB – mainly due to the fact that operators are finding it hard to persuade all of their content partners to permit the delivery of their content direct to the TV.
