Last minute Spanish football rights settlement
August 20, 2012 10.12 Europe/London By Julian Clover

The intervention of the Spanish secretary for sport Miguel Cardenal has resulted in a three-year share of the country’s pay-TV football rights.

Canal+ and Mediapro will now share the rights to La Liga through to the end of the 2014/15 season. The pay-TV platform, in which Prisa is a significant shareholder will have the top pick each week including coverage of either Real Madrid or Barcelona. Canal+ Liga will extend its offer with between three and eight further matches.

Mediapro said that the agreement, the absence of which had threatened to derail the start of the new season this weekend, provided a viable model for the league and a stable position for the consumer.

GOL T, Mediapro’s pay-TV channel will have access to eight games per round, including Barcelona or Real Madrid. Mediapro will also have a weekly free-to-air match, the first of which will be Zaragoza v Valladolid, airing on La Sexta this evening.

Mediapro will hold the international rights to La Liga.
