Intruder gets caught in kitchen ceiling

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Oct. 31 (UPI) -- A former employee trying to climb into a Virginia Beach, Va., restaurant got himself stuck in a duct for 8 hours, police said.
Harold Owens told The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot he stepped into his Harold's restaurant Saturday morning and found the fire suppression system in the kitchen had gone off. Then he heard noise from above and saw legs dangling from the hood over the stove.
Owens called the police, who cut away the 18-inch-by-18-inch exhaust vent to free the man, Fire Department Battalion Chief Ken Pravetz said. The man had climbed in about 3 a.m. in an apparent attempt to enter the restaurant.
Owens said the trapped man, who police did not identify, was a former employee who apologized for trying to climb through the duct.
The trapped man was alert and suffered only minor injuries, Pravetz said. He was taken to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.
