HD+ shines for SES
July 27, 2012 09.40 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The performance of the HD+ service offered by its German affiliate HD Plus was one of the main highlights for SES in its half-year results, which were generally boosted by the performance of new markets.

The HDTV platform attracted over 120,000 new paying subscribers in the second quarter, ending June with 634,290 and expected to reach one million by the end of the year.

In total, 2 million households were using service during the individual free 12-month period as of June 30.

SES as a whole posted revenues of €665.1 million in H1, up 4.8% on a year earlier, while its EBITDA was €665.1 million (+5.3%) and operating profit €411.5 million (+2.4%).

Germany was significant for the company in that it finally switched off its analogue DTH transmissions at the end of April, freeing up transponder capacity.

This is largely being contracted out again to serve the German market, with HD offerings continuing to be a major driver. Overall utilisation in Europe stood at 81.4% as of the end of June.
