Harmonic Debuts ProMedia Multiscreen Video Lineup

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 8/5/2011 11:56:08 AM

Harmonic has repackaged its encoding offerings for live and on-demand multiscreen video delivery under a new brand, ProMedia.

The products span a range of transcoding, packaging and origination functions, aimed at delivering video to TVs, PCs, tablets, smartphones and other IP-connected devices.

The family comprises four software products: ProMedia Live, a real-time MPEG-4 H.264 video processing and transcoding system for Internet video streams; ProMedia Carbon (formerly Carbon Coder), a file-based transcoder that multiple outputs; ProMedia Package, a carrier-grade system for producing adaptive bit-rate HTTP streaming video; and ProMedia Origin, an HTTP and RTMP streaming video server.

Each of the ProMedia software products is available as a standalone tool that can run on Windows PCs. In addition, Harmonic is offering two hardware appliances based on standard hardware to host the various ProMedia software applications.

"As demand continues to grow for more video on more devices, content creators and service providers need to implement an efficient and scalable infrastructure that can support a wide variety of input, editing, and output formats," Harmonic director of multiscreen product line management Moore Macauley said in a statement.

Harmonic's products are currently used in more than 200 multiscreen deployments worldwide, according to the company.

First customer shipments of the ProMedia products are expected to begin this month. The company plans to show off the new lineup at IBC2011 in Amsterdam, set to run Sept. 9-13.
