Freesat exceeds sales projections
00.00 Europe/London, September 7, 2011 By Julian Clover

Freesat has said it has exceeded its original sales targets, announcing total sales of two million units in the three years since its launch. The total value of retail sales is put at £1 billion.

The BBC-ITV company says 47% of its customers have churned from Sky so far in 2011. It added it was the fastest growing TV platform in the UK, adding 88,000 more homes in Q2 2011, more than double that added by Sky on the quarter.

“We launched three years ago and in that short time have quickly established ourselves as a real challenger and genuine alternative to pay-TV,” said managing director Emma Scott.

Freesat has also committed to a regular, twice yearly update of its market performance from this point onwards.

The company will also be launching the next stage of its product and service development in early 2012. The G2 platform is expected to be based on the HbbTV protocol.
