FIFA reviews 3D World Cup
June 20, 2013 09.45 Europe/London By Julian Clover

FIFA is reconsidering plans to video the next World Cup in the 3D format; it follows the decision by the US sports broadcaster ESPN to close its own 3D channel later this year.

Last week ESPN said it would abandon 3D broadcasts in favour of the 4K format.

“We know that the technology has had a few setbacks in recent days, if you refer to some of the statements by (ESPN),” Niclas Ericson, FIFA’s director of television, said Wednesday at a Federations Cup Briefing.

Ericson said that the governing body was considering whether the 2014 World Cup, which is being staged in Brazil, will include a 3D element, along with the number of matches should 3D be given the green light.

Although Ericsson indicated there was interest from several broadcast, cost was another factor.

In 2010, 25 matches were shown in the 3D format, picked up by broadcasters including ESPN, TF1, Eurosport, Al Jazeera Sport and RTP.
