EWTN launches German channel on Astra
10.07 Europe/London, October 31, 2011 By Robert Briel

EWTN Global Catholic Network will launch a new television channel in Germany on Sunday, November 6.

Called EWTN Katholisches TV, the new channel will air Catholic religious programming 24-hours-a-day on Astra 1H. It is available free-to-air and aims at German speaking viewers across Europe.

“We have been broadcasting part-time in Germany since July 2000, but the launch of our new network, EWTN Katholisches TV, on Astra IH will place us in the same satellite neighborhood as many of Germany’s most popular television channels,” said EWTN president & CEO Michael P. Warsaw, in a statement.

During the launch, EWTN will debut 12 new series in German. The German launch has been in the works for some time, according to Martin Rothweiler, managing director of EWTN’s German corporation.

EWTN recently also announce that it is the first Catholic television network to be available on the Roku over-the-top set-top box. Roku customers can watch EWTN’s US English and US Spanish (EWTN Español) television channels through their Roku streaming players. EWTN is a free channel.

“Throughout our 30-year history, EWTN has always been willing to use cutting-edge technology to carry out our mission,” said Warsaw. “Our partnership with Roku is an exciting innovation which makes our US English and US Spanish-language programs available to an even larger audience.”

EWTN Global Catholic Network, in its 30th year, is available in over 160 million television households in more than 140 countries and territories. With its direct broadcast satellite television and radio services, AM and FM radio networks, worldwide short-wave radio station, internet website, electronic and print news services, and publishing arm, EWTN claims to be the largest religious media network in the world.
