ESPN renews football rights, launches near live EPL app
02 Aug 11 -

ESPN has secured live broadcast rights to Italian, Dutch and Russian football for the 2011/2012 season.

The sports broadcaster has renewed agreements to air live and exclusive coverage of some of Italy’s Serie A, Coppa Italia and Italian Super Cup matches, along with coverage from top Dutch league Dutch Eredivisie and the Russian Premier Liga.

Jeroen Oerlemans, vice-president TV channels, ESPN EMEA, said: “The renewal of these agreements is an excellent result for all football fans in the UK, giving them access to live and exclusive coverage of some of Europe’s leading football leagues and competitions. We are building an excellent portfolio of live football and sport on ESPN.”

ESPN also announced that from next season its ESPN Goals app will offer near live highlights of English Premier League matches “within minutes” of the end of the game. The app and service will be free of charge via Apple iTunes, Android Market, Nokia’s OVI Store, the Blackberry App World and Windows Phone Marketplace. As well as match highlights, it will offer live scores and fixtures, match previews, weekend round ups and interviews.
