DJ 'plays music for pigs on Rwandan farm

Thursday, October 7 2010,

OddA DJ has been hired to play music to pigs on a farm in northern Rwanda to boost meat production.

Edmund Ndizeye plays a mix of hip-hop, love songs, R'n'B, reggae and local tunes to the animals on the Urwibutso complex attached to a truck-stop, Reuters reports.

Farm director Gerard Sina claimed that he first saw the technique being used in Belgium six years ago with positive results.

"Human beings like music so I asked myself, why not for animals?" he said. "We have to select music which can satisfy my animals.

"I have a sample which have been reared with music and another without. Those reared with music double their yields in terms of number of offspring, the quality of the meat and their weight.

"When we want to make them pregnant we have to put on strong music, so that the males can be strong and virile."

Sina gives 150 piglets to local families every month, while retaining the first-born and passing the mother on to another family.

"It can easily reduce poverty and food security in this region. This is a way of eradicating unemployment," he explained.
