Just when it thought its week couldn’t get worse: Netflix has found that it is to go face to face with DISH Network’s Blockbuster Movie Pass in the over the top (OTT) video market.

From 1 October 2011, Blockbuster Movie Pass is said to offer a pay-TV industry first in the form of a subscription streaming video service bundling movies for the TV or PC.

The OTT online video service will be available for DISH Network customers, starting at $10 per month, offering TV, films and games.

On offer are more than 100,000 DVD movies, TV shows and games available by mail with no additional charge for high definition Blu-ray movies. In addition there are 20 premium entertainment movie channels from studios like MGM, Epix, Sony Movie Channel, PixL and more. Users are also able to stream more than 3,000 movies to the TV or 4,000 movies to the PC.

“We are uniquely positioned to take advantage of the myriad of ways consumers seek access to their favourite movies, TV shows or games,” said Joe Clayton, CEO of DISH Network. “We’ve created a package that combines the best assets of the movie entertainment and video gaming industries with the convenience and integration provided by a multichannel video provider,” added Michael Kelly, president of Blockbuster

Dish Network streaming Blockbuster movies
20.27 Europe/London, September 25, 2011 By Robert Briel

VIDEO. US satellite DTH operator Dish Network has announced that it will start to offer streaming movies and TV series under the Blockbuster brand. The new service aims to compete with Netflix.

Called Blockbuster Movie Pass, subscribers will have access to 3,000 movies streaming to their TV and 4,000 movies streamed to their PC. In addition, the subscription will also include 100,000 movies by mail (sic) on DVD or Blu-ray.

The cost for the new service is set at $10 ($7.4) a month and new subscribers to Dish’s TV service will get Blockbuster for free for 12 months. The Movie Pass is also included to subscribers to the Dish Network Top 200 programming package at $39.95 a month.

The announcement comes at the time when Netflix has said it is doing way with its combined DVDs-by-mail and streaming subscriptions. Netflix will offer streaming services only, while the newly created Qwikster will continue to serve the DVD-by-mail market.

It is not quite clear how many – if any – of the current Dish satellite receivers are hybrid devices, which can connect streaming services to the TV screen.
