Digital Plus rebrands as Canal Plus

Spain’s largest pay-TV platform, Digital Plus, is changing its name and from mid October will use the brand Canal Plus. The current channel Canal Plus will be branded as Canal Plus 1 to avoid misunderstanding. So, the Canal Plus family of channels will be named: Canal + 1, Canal+ Dos, Canal+ Acción, Canal+ Acción… 30, Canal+ Acción HD, Canal+ Comedia, Canal+ Comedia HD, Canal+ DCine, Canal+ Deportes, Canal+ Deportes HD, Canal+ Deportes 2 HD, Canal+ Fútbol, Canal+ Fútbol HD, Canal+ Golf, Canal+ Liga, Canal+ Liga HD, Canal+ Liga 2, Canal+ Toros, Canal+ Xtra and Canal+ Xtra HD.

This is the second time the company has changed the name of its DTH platform. In 2003, the digital merger between Canal Satelite Digital and Via Digital, gave rise to Digital Plus, now Canal Plus.

Also, the digital platform, now called Canal Plus, will make its pay-TV service available through PLC (Power Line Communications) following an agreement with Devolo.

Rebrand for Spain’s Digital+

Rebrand for Spain’s Digital+

10.19 Europe/London, September 30, 2011 By Julian Clover

The Spanish pay-TV platform Digital+ is to be rebranded as Canal+ from October 17. It’s part of a company wide process conducted by parent Prisa, which is seeking to carry brands that have the widest recognition possible.
There will be no immediate changes to the composition of the various pay-TV packages delivered from the Astra and Hispasat satellite systems.
Studies undertaken by the group show that the Canal+ brand, a part of the Spanish TV landscape for 20 years has more resonance with the public than Digital+.
Internationally the pay-TV packages have often been referred to erroneously as Sogecable, the name of the former holding company, already rebranded as Prisa TV.
Last December 44% of the share capital in Digital+ was sold to Telefónica and Telecinco, who now own 22% each, with Prisa on 56%.
Digital+ was created from the 2003 merger of Canal Satelite Digital and Via Digital.
