SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A father remains in jail on accusations he endangered the life of his three children when police say they saw him trying to teach his 12-year-old daughter how to drive while he was drunk.
According to the Sacramento police booking report, an officer spotted a car sitting in the middle of an intersection late Saturday night.
Sacramento Police Department spokeswoman Officer Laura Peck said the officer found father Aaron Gorman, 37, in the front passenger seat, his 12-year-old daughter behind the wheel, and his 10- and 13-year-old sons in the back seat. Peck said the officer reported Gorman appeared drunk.
In a jailhouse interview, Gorman denied much of the officer's report. He said he wasn't drunk, just one son was in the backseat and the car never got that far. He maintained the car was six houses away from the intersection with the front tires in his driveway and rear tires in the street.
"She panicked. She tried to get it in reverse to go back," Gorman said.
"I said, oh no, no, no, no, no. We got people behind us. You gotta stop when you see the police. They probably just want to see what we're doing. Just stop.' So she stopped, put it in park. That's when I got out.
When I got out, they thought, I don't know what they was thinking, but ... yeah, I'm cool. I'm gonna get back in my car."
Bail was set at $60,000 for Gorman. His arraignment was scheduled for Tuesday in Sacramento County Superior Court.
