CES: Accedo to provide app solution for Orange Live Box Play
By Jamie Beach January 9th, 2013

France Telecom/Orange has chosen app solutions from Swedish firm Accedo as a key enabler of the Appshop section of its upcoming Orange Live Box Play set-top boxes, due for launch later this year.

The Orange Live Box Play uses Accedo’s application management solution Accedo Application Sphere, which provides a fully customisable front-end user interface with multiple existing applications, as well as a highly scalable and secure back-end system.

“Accedo has impressive experience developing TV applications, with a highly flexible proven application management solution” commented Jean-Bernard Willem, Head of content marketing Orange France. “Accedo was therefore a natural choice to partner with us on this solution, which we believe will be an extremely strong proposition for the end-user.”

The new set-top boxes will run on Intel Groveland chips, and Orange intends to integrate social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, enabling viewers to access those sites on a split screen whilst watching TV or on-demand programs.

Orange recently awarded a contract to French firm Movea to integrate motion control technology into the new boxes, enabling customers to interact with their Orange TV service in new ways by using the motion-sensing remote control.

Pay-TV services again delivered a much-needed prop for France Telecom/Orange in the third quarter of last year, with the company reaching 4.882mn subscribers in France alone, served by a combination of IPTV and DTH services.
