Cable gains, DTH loses in Romania
10.57 Europe/London, December 15, 2011 By Chris Dziadul

Romania had 5.70 million pay-TV subscribers as of June 30 this year, or 0.6% fewer than six months earlier, according to data published by the regulator ANCOM.

Although the number of cable subscribers grew by 4% over the six-month period to 3.46 million, this was offset by a 7.6% reduction in DTH subscribers to 2.2 million.

While the IPTV market in Romania is still in its infancy, the 38,000-subscriber figure as of June 30 was 27.9% higher than at the end of last year.

Total pay-TV penetration stood at 77.9% (down from 78.4%), while that for cable rose (from 45.4% to 47.3%) and for DTH fell (from 32.6% to 30.1%).

The number of cable service providers as of June 30 stood at 475, or three fewer then at the end of last year.

The number of DTH platforms was meanwhile down from five to three, and IPTV operators grew in number from two to three.

Despite trailing to cable, DTH still accounted for the lion’s share of digital homes as of mid-2011 (78%), with cable claiming 24.7% and IPTV only 1.3% of the total.
