BT# criticises Virgin Media# Stop the Broadband# Con campaign

Friday, November 19th 2010

The telecoms giant# said Virgin Media is guilty of misleading advertising of its own.
A BT# spokesperson has branded Virgin Media hypocritical for the latter company's Stop the Broadband# Con campaign.

The initiative, which was launched by the cable broadband provider this week, calls on consumers to put their names to a petition and demand internet service providers (ISPs) stop advertising "up to" speeds described by Virgin Media as "misleading".

However#, a spokesperson from BT told IT Pro that Virgin is just as guilty of this practise as its rivals.

"It is the only ISP that charges based on speed, for example up to 10Mb/s, 20Mb/s [and] 50Mb/s," the source noted. "In fact, in some areas of the [Virgin Media] site broadband is described simply as 10Mb/s or 20Mb/s."

In response,# a Virgin Media# spokesperson pointed out the company publishes the "real-world speeds" its customers are receiving every month.

Research from the company has revealed 93 per cent of consumers believe ISPs should be prevented from making speed claims unless these rates can be received by the majority of customers#.
