Brazil adds 3 million Pay-TV subscribers in a year


According to information disclosed by the Brazilian regulating agency Anatel, Pay-TV in said country closed October 2012 with 15.7 million subscribers and recorded 300.600 net additions. Such figures account for a 1.95% growth regarding September of this year and a 29% growth as compared with the same period of the previous year. Between October 2011 and October 2012, more than 2.95 million new subscribers were recorded.

As for the technology utilized by the different operators, DTH keeps on leading the market with a 59.96% penetration rate; whereas, cable reached a 39.02% of subscribers. DTH added 256,424 new subscribers between September and October 2012 (that is, a 0.2% increase), while cable recorded 51,456 new users (thus recording a 0.1% increase). MMDS operators keep falling as they lost 7,225 subscribers in a month (that is, a 0.3% fall). As of October 2012, such technology relies on only 156,670 subscribers in the whole country.

Anatel has also disclosed that Net/Embratel keeps on leading the Pay-TV market in Brazil with a total 8.288.958 subscribers -in September, 121.059 new clients were added. Sky (DirecTV) comes second with 4.873.519 -102.508 new clients in a month. Oi comes third with 651.382 subscribers -47.911 clients were added-, Telefónica/Vivo comes fourth with 606.700 subscribers -8.466 subscribers were lost- and GVT comes fifth with 386.197 users, followed by Algar and ViaCabo, among others.
