AsiaSat 8, the latest satellite to bolster broadcast capacity across Asia and the Middle East, will be launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida on 5 August by SpaceX's Falcon 9 vehicle.

To be co-located with AsiaSat 7 at the orbital location of 105.5° East, the Space Systems / Loral 1300 series satellite has 24 Ku-band transponders, a Ka-band payload and a design life of 15 years.

"AsiaSat 8 will provide exceptional power and additional Ku beam coverage with inter-beam switching capability for services including DTH television, private networks and broadband services," said a statement from the Hong Kong-based company.

The satellite is scheduled for launch at 1.25pm Hong Kong time or 1.25am EDT. It will be followed into geostationary orbit later in August by AsiaSat 6, which has also been delivered to the Cape Canaveral launch base.

AsiaSat 9, which is on order from SSL, is planned for launch in 2017.
