null modem cable substitute

My laptop does not have a com port. Do I need to buy a USB to com port adapter and a null modem cable to install the firmware? Can I just connect a crossover cable and download the firmware update as a substitute? Do the ports download to the same location?

You can update firmware with flash wizard with no need for serial port connection.
