Print industry sunk by Internet

PRINT NEWSPAPER circulation in the USA is about to plummet to its lowest level since 1946, thanks to the rise of the Internet, according to analyst outfit Newsosaur.

Apparently life is getting so bad the printed newspaper industry that circulation will drop to about 50 million this year.

Since 1946 the US population has doubled so that means that only half the numbers of people that used to look at a newspaper over their cornflakes do so now.

Alan Mutter, at Newsosaur is predicting that, within a decade, print-paper circulation and ad revenue will likely be a quarter of what it is today.

There are several reasons for this. The first is that advertisers are asking themselves why they should spend a lot of cash on adverts that they have no idea if anyone looks at. Then there is the small matter of the fact that online media does not cost so many trees to make.

Mutter thinks that the $30 billion, of the $42 billion that was spent on print newspapers in 2007 in the US, is going to mostly end up in the paws of Internet publishers
