The EU finally cops on to Cyber terrorism threat

:nana:

What is this InterWeb thing, anyway?

THE EU HAS only just arrived at the shocking conclusion that the Internet could in fact be used by extremists to carry out nefarious acts of incitement and help them in their evil terrorist plots. Having only just thought of this, the Euro states moved quickly on Friday to come up with tough laws for punishing any newfound cyber terrorists the Eurocrats can actually get their virtual hands on.

Reuters reports that a joint statement by the Johnny come lately ministers gravely notes that, “The Internet is used to inspire and mobilise local terrorists ... functioning as a virtual training camp”. The ministers were eager to share their ‘new’ discovery with their American counterparts, along with news about the fall of the Berlin wall and the annexation of the Sudetenland.

Another concern for the we-live-in-ivory-towers-without-Internet-connection Euro ministers was that some groups could actually try to get hold of explosives online, or even find out how to make them (shock! horror!). The bright Euro sparks are now trying to figure out ways to stop this from happening, or, failing that, at least setting up some kind of early warning system that will let them know if any sticks of TNT or bomb detonators go missing from government arsenals. We wonder what “early warning” means in Euro time terms though.

Not all European countries have been so slow off the mark, however. Spain and Italy have already got measures to deal with those hell bent on spreading net hatred and inciting others to terrorism. Now they’ll just have to teach their soft minded Euro brothers how to get tough on e-extremists. Think Terminator meets European anti terrorism (Euro-nator?)

Still, ever wary of hurting the sensitive feelings of rights campaigners, the new laws will apparently in no way restrict freedom of expression or freedom of the press. Unless of course, freedom of expression involves going ‘kaboom’ in a crowded areas
