Intel makes a mish mash of the Internet

And then they peel them with their metal knives

TODAY INTEL IS SET to launch its new Mash Maker browser extension, which the company claims will allow users to mash up Web pages even more than they already are, providing them with a whole host of useless but customisable information suited to the user’s preferences.

After a closed beta period where 8000 users were told to make a mish mash of the Internet, a new and public mash fest will be launched later today, which allows users to pull up information ranging from extra maps and stats, to reviews and commentary on the most popular of the world’s Websites.

The way the Mash Maker works is through a set of widgets that are able to figure out what Web site they’re actually on, and how to make them better, on the basis of their user’s already specified preferences. The Mashing tool apparently looks at all “useful” data on a Web page, like text, pictures, maps etc, and then sorts them into various sub categories, for which a whole host of additional information is available.

The example given by Intel, is that on a travel website, a mashup would be able to tell a user how much leg room they’d get on a certain flight (not much if you’re traveling scum class), and show a map of the destination (useful if you find your destination to be terminal five in Heathrow).

The new tool is also based on open application programming, so nerdy users can even write up their own widgets and bung them up on various Web sites.

Top boffin at Intel Research Berkeley, Robert Ennals, who is the creator of Intel’s mash, gushed “It is like turning the whole Web into Wikipedia". Sounds mashing. µ

Inqblot: The last time Intel claimed it was improving the Internet was when it entered into an unequal struggle to convince world+dog that the Pentium III would speed up the Web by judicious use of Non-Rational Uniform B-Splines, or NURBS. This claim was, of course, what boffins often refer to as 'complete bollocks'.
