USSR alive and well on the Internet

You can't keep a good socialist republic down

:nana:

WHILE THE SOVIET UNION may have disappeared and been replaced by a oligarch-backed democracy, it seems that the glorious socialist republic still exists online.

A while back it was reported that a fight had been going on to keep the old .su domain name. Since then it appears that the numbers of people trying to register with those URLs is steadily increasing.

According to Associated Press, registrations have increased 45 percent this year alone. The domain is populated by bloggers, entrepreneurs and die-hard communists.

No doubt some of the activity is due to nostalgia for the Soviet era but there is also a strong pro-Putin presence there too, although since he was a former KGB officer it is not really surprising.

There is even an Apple.su site registered, although the punter who owns it apparently will swap it for a new laptop... even if it is not a Mac.

Vladimir Khramov, a network administrator from Moscow, got his hands on microsoft.su so that he could remember his e-mail address, apparently
