Replacing their 'X' series of LCD TV's, the new 'XV' series from Toshiba is available now in the UK.
Toshiba joins a small but growing band of manufacturers offering a 32in Full HD screen. The XV range offers entry-level Full HD, 1080p (1920 x 1080 resolution) screens in 32in, 37in and 42in sizes.
Along with a claimed 30,000:1 contrast ratio, new feature on the 'XV' series, 'lumasens', has been designed to adjust the LCD backlight depending on the prevailing lighting conditions of your room. The backlight actually becomes dimmer in darker rooms, to increase black levels and contrast. Brighter rooms will see the backlight become brighter, to make the picture more easily visible. The energy saving side effect is that in darker rooms you'll save electricity, because less power is required for the backlight.
Another energy saving element, full power down mode, reduces the TV's power consumption to zero. Game mode adds 1:1 pixel mapping for that crisper than crisp detailing.
It is worth noting that apart from a few minor differences (cosmetic being one) the XV505 and XV503 are essentially the same. The XV505 is exclusive to Currys/Dixons.
