Calls are growing in Russia for the creation of public council on national TV. According to a local report, Sergei Mironov, a member of the upper chamber of the country’s parliament, has said that such a body is needed to uphold ethical and moral standards.

Mironov is supported by, amongst others, the Culture and Mass Communications Ministry, which last year alone fielded 1,600 complaints about the low quality of TV programming. The stations that came in for particular criticism were Comedy Club, Dom-2 and 2×2.

With President Putin having also weighed in favour of such a council, the stage could be set for some far-reaching changes in Russia’s TV industry.
