MultiChoice looks for broadband connectivity
IPTV WORLD FORUM – LONDON: MultiChoice is hoping that South Africa’s telecoms providers will be able to give it the connectivity to expand its push VOD service over broadband. The operator, which has around 1.5 million subscribers in South Africa and a further 500,000 in neighbouring countries, is currently using PVR technology to reach its subscribers. Around 250,000 currently take the service, which has a 250 GB hard drive.
“It’s very much like the Sky service, but without the return path, and that’s an issue we must address going forward,” Richard Fyffe, general manager iTV, Multichoice told delegates.
Speaking afterwards to Broadband TV News, Fyffe said that MultiChoice would be ready to offer broadband connectivity from early next year, but was dependent on the infrastructure of the incumbent telco.
Although MultiChoice does not operate its own broadband service, a sister company enables it to offer broadband within a single bill.
