Nokia is not one to slack off keeping their flagship N-series devices in the race. With all the hype surrounding their previous N95 model, its long speculated, and much awaited update has finally arrived. Hailed as the multimedia computer, we take the new Nokia N95 8GB for a spin.

Nip 'N' Tuck

After much pondering, the new and redesigned N95 8GB can be best described as classy and urbane. Clad in glossy black this time around, the N95 8GB shares the same size and bulk as its predecessor, the N95, but somehow manages to come out looking a whole lot more sophisticated. Still, there are three major differences in design that you'd want to know about.

On the cosmetic front, the fresh N95 8GB has a bigger screen at 2.8-inches in comparison to the N95's 2.6-inches and is in fact, more flushed with the rest of the handset. 0.2-inches may seem minor on paper, but it is immediately noticeable, trust us. As a compromise, the soft-keys and navigational controls have to be smaller to fit in the remaining space. We did not find any difficulties using them though, and as a result, we have no complaints regarding them. Looking at the back, Nokia has taken away the mechanical lens shutter, which may be a good thing for some, except that it is prone to smudges and dust now. Nokia might want to think of something else for future models.

The dual slider experience on the N95 8GB has also been improved as it now feels more stable, without the shifting feeling on the previous model. The hidden multimedia keys have are also a little elevated for more tactile feedback than on the N95, which was designed as a flat row.

As its name implies, one of the major improvements to the N95 8GB is the inclusion of a huge 8GB internal memory storage. Because of this however, the N95 8GB no longer features a memory expansion slot like the original N95.

Think of it as having a permanent 8GB microSD card in your phone to lug around your favorite multimedia items, but you lose the flexibility of switching or upgrading storage. There have been user reports that the N95 actually recognizes 8GB microSD cards despite Nokia's 2GB limit, so N95 users can rest easy. However, internal memory access is still faster than reading from a memory card, an advantage to the N95 8GB.

Performance Improvements

Connectivity-wise, the N95 8GB shares similar capabilities with the N95, supporting all the major networks including HSDPA, GPRS, WiFi and Bluetooth. Built-in GPS technology is still supported, and further enhanced through A-GPS (Assisted GPS) to improve performance, speed and in some cases, help free up CPU usage on the phone.

While the camera function is one of the N95 8GB's strongest points, not much has been changed since the N95. It still features a 5.0-megapixel sensor, autofocus and built-in flash, but consumers can expect a boost to image quality as the N95 8GB seems to perform better under low ambient lighting conditions and results are clearer and more natural. Not forgetting the integration of the new N-gage platform in the N95 8GB, users can now depend on the phone to deliver hours of delightful entertainment.

Closing Thoughts

Equipped with a plethora of fantastic functions, the N95 8GB comes with a bigger 1200mAh battery as compared to the N95's 950mAh pack. However, battery life is still a concern. Although we were able to pack in two days of continuous usage with minimal calls and a few SMSes, we wished performance would have been better in this area. Call quality was good and no interference was experienced. In all senses, the Nokia N95 8GB is a delightful and entertaining mobile packing all your dream applications and most importantly, capturing the most candid moments in your life.
