Remember the beautiful L'Amour collection Nokia introduced in late 2005? Those exquisite phones were a strong testament to Nokia's ability to fashion exciting and aesthetically appealing phones. Of course, there are several phones in the N-series that are just as exciting too. The latest wacky design to emerge from the design think-tank of Nokia is the Nokia 7500 Prism, and this is a mobile phone that is certain to raise eyebrows.

Suffice to say, the Nokia 7500 Prism is definitely not for everyone. With a bold styling that is a synthesis of sharp triangles (hence the Prism moniker), only those who might raise their eyebrows in delight at the possibility of either exclusivity or pure love for triangular buttons would have a liking for the phone. Whether or not it is a good design is subjective and remains to be seen, but at least it was distinctive enough to capture our attention. The prism design theme even extends to the onboard 2.0 megapixel camera and flash unit.
Although the triangular buttons of the numberpad interlock together to create a fancy geometrical shape to give the Nokia 7500 Prism its unique demeanor, its form factor is still very much that of a traditional candy bar form; its façade is comprised of a LCD, a navigation thumbstick and the numberpad, of course. Regrettably, the oddly shaped keys on the numberpad proved to be tricky for composing short messages, even for veteran Nokia users – shame because the keys have a really good tactile feel to them. As for the thumbstick, we found that it was too short and stiff for us to navigate around the functions quickly.
Rainbow effect
The Nokia 7500 Prism is currently available in black with white and red versions slated to be released sometime later this year. Now, if black is too dreary for you, you'll be happy to know there are two exchangeable accents bundled together with the phone to let you change the color tone to keep things fresh from time to time. It doesn't just stop there though. When switched on, the Nokia 7500 Prism lights up at intervals around the joystick when there is reception.
Beyond the angular theme, the Nokia 7500 Prism lets you snap pictures and videos via a 2.0-megapixel camera. An expandable memory slot that supports up to 2GB of flash storage and a media player for music and video playback together with FM radio allow the Nokia 7500 Prism to entertain as well. Supported music and video formats are MP3/AAC/eAAC+/WMA and H.263/MPEG-4/WMV respectively. Most impressive however, was the three days of usage we got from the phone.
Ultimate outcome
Overall, the Nokia 7500 Prism offers a wide variety of features and functions at a very affordable price of SGD$448 (~USD$289) without operator plan. The tight joystick and the fairly clumsy keypad can be overlooked when battery life, functionality and exclusivity are considered. For basic users who do not require 3G connectivity and resource intensive smartphone functions, the Nokia 7500 Prism is a good all-in-one device that will serve you well in both communications and entertainment.
