Evening

Studio: Focus FeaturesDirector: Lajos Koltai
Screenwriter:
Susan Minot, Michael CunninghamStarring: Claire Danes, Toni Collette, Vanessa Redgrave, Patrick Wilson, Hugh Dancy, Natasha Richardson, Mamie Gummer, Eileen Atkins, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close
Genre: Drama
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for some thematic elements, sexual material, a brief accident scene and language)

Plot Summary:
"Evening" unites a stellar cast, and is based on the beloved novel by Susan Minot and adapted for the screen by Ms. Minot and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Cunningham ("The Hours"), under the direction of Lajos Koltai ("Fateless"), who was previously an Academy Award-nominated cinematographer.

"Evening" is a deeply emotional film that illuminates the timeless love which binds mother and daughter – seen through the prism of one mother’s life as it crests with optimism, navigates a turning point, and ebbs to its close. Two pairs of real-life mothers and daughters – Vanessa Redgrave and Natasha Richardson, and Meryl Streep and Mamie Gummer – portray, respectively, a mother and her daughter and the mother's best friend at different stages in life.

Overcome by the power of memory, Ann Lord (Ms. Redgrave) reveals a long-held secret to her concerned daughters; Constance (Ms. Richardson), a content wife and mother, and Nina (Toni Collette), a restless single woman. Both are bedside when Ann calls out for the man she loved more than any other.

But who is this "Harris," wonder her daughters, and what is he to our mother? While Constance and Nina try to take stock of Ann's life and their own lives, their mother is tended to by a night nurse (Eileen Atkins) as she journeys in her mind back to a summer weekend some fifty years ago, when she was Ann Grant (Claire Danes)…

…a young woman who has come from New York City to be maid of honor at the high-society Newport wedding of her dearest friend from college, Lila Wittenborn (Ms. Gummer). The bride-to-be is jittery, and turns to her maid of honor rather than her own mother (Glenn Close) for support. Ann stays close to her friend, yet is even closer to Lila’s irrepressible brother Buddy (Hugh Dancy).

Unexpected feelings surge forth once Ann meets wedding guest Harris Arden (Patrick Wilson), a lifelong friend and intimate of the Wittenborn family. Ann's love for Harris will change her life, and those of her daughters, forever.

In the hilarious new animated-adventure, "Ratatouille," a rat named Remy dreams of becoming a great chef despite his family's wishes and the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession. When fate places Remy in the city of Paris, he finds himself ideally situated beneath a restaurant made famous by his culinary hero, Auguste Gusteau. Despite the apparent dangers of being an unwanted visitor in the kitchen at one of Paris' most exclusive restaurants, Remy forms an unlikely partnership with Linguini, the garbage boy, who inadvertently discovers Remy's amazing talents. They strike a deal, ultimately setting into motion a hilarious and exciting chain of extraordinary events that turns the culinary world of Paris upside down.

Remy finds himself torn between following his dreams or returning forever to his previous existence as a rat. He learns the truth about friendship, family and having no choice but to be who he really is, a rat who wants to be a chef. Directed by Academy Award®-winner Brad Bird.

Not AvailableStarring: Not Available
Genre: Documentary

Plot Summary:
Dr. Emanuel Bronner was a master soapmaker, self-proclaimed rabbi, and, allegedly, Albert Einstein's nephew.

In 1947, after escaping from a mental institution, he invented the formula for "Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap," a peppermint-infused, all-natural, multi-purpose liquid that can be found today in every American health food store. On each bottle of his soap, he printed an ever-evolving set of teachings he called "The Moral ABC," designed, in his words, "To Unite All Mandkind Free!"

A human story about a socially responsible company, "Dr. Bronner's Magic Soapbox" documents the complicated family legacy behind the counterculture's favorite cleaning product -- Bronner's son, 68-year-old Ralph, endured over 15 orphanages and foster homes as a child, but despite difficult memories, is his father's most ardent fan...

Studio: Kino InternationalDirector: Barbara Albert
Screenwriter:
Barbara AlbertStarring: Nina Proll, Birgit Minichmayr, Ursula Strauss, Kathrin Resetarits, Gabriela Hegedüs, Ina Strnad, Darina Dujmic, Georg Friedrich
Genre: Drama

Plot Summary:
Four friends - Nina, Brigitte, Alex, and Nicole, all in their early thirties - are reunited at a funeral. Nicole has come with her 12-year-old daughter, Daphne; Nina is seven months pregnant. Despite
the sad occasion of this reunion, old behaviors will not stay suppressed: Nina still laughs uncontrollably at inappropriate times. And from the way they make fun of their former classmates, it's clear
that the old clique is back together again.

When a laughing fit makes Nina abruptly leave the funeral reception, others join her outside. They all decide to go back and visit their old school, and unexpectedly, another old classmate and friend, Carmen, shows up to join them. Carmen is currently living in Germany, where she is working as an actress; for a while she was very successful – a 'shooting star.' Later, when the friends are standing in their old classroom, Nina remembers a slogan from their past: 'We're free!'

As such, the six women - i.e. Nina, Brigitte, Alex, Nicole, Daphne and Carmen - pile into two cars and decide to go cruising. After pulling over for a break near an outdoor festival, they stumble across Norbert, Nina's ex-boyfriend, who has just gotten married. Alcohol flows freely in the party tent, and the wedding guests celebrate raucously. But instead of dancing with his bride, Norbert kisses his old flame Nina, making the bride furious.

Afterwards, the friends decide to go to the local disco - and the bride joins them, not wanting to be around the groom. What ensues is a night of fun, unexpected coincidences and shocking revelations that will both re-unite these old friends and forever change their future.

Strike

Studio: Red Envelope Entertainment/Laemmle Zeller FilmsDirector: Volker Schlöndorff
Screenwriter:
Andreas PflügerStarring: Katharina Thalbach
Genre: Drama

Plot Summary:
"Strike" is the true story of a remarkable and little known figure who was integral in beginning the Solidarity movement and setting Poland on the course to democracy. It's a touching tribute to a true overlooked hero, a woman who undergoes an important awakening – the realization of an ordinary person who simply looks around her and distinguishes right from wrong. Just as the simple action of Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat provided a catalyst for the entire Civil Rights Movement, so the actions of this single worker set the strikes in the Lenin Shipyards in Gdansk in motion, ultimately bringing about the Solidarity Movement, the rise of Lech Walesa, Perestroika, and eventually to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
